A Sit Down with Michael Scott Slosar
Michael Scott Slosar is a California native with a keen eye for subtle details and a deep understanding of commercial advertising as an art form. A balanced fusion of these traits built an impressive portfolio for Slosar, with work spanning both the creative and commercial realms of photography.
He realized his dream to become a photographer in the late 90’s after transferring to Brooks Institute to study advertising and photography. “Nobody ever told me that you could make a career in photography until I first went to college and took a photo course,” Slosar said. “I knew more than the instructor did. Then they started talking about careers, and I found out that I could do what I love and do it for the rest of my life as a living, so I transferred schools.”
Since then he has worked with some of the most prominent brands in the world with clients like the NFL, Reebok, Toyota, Dickies, Skechers, and many more. Capturing expressive or moving subjects can be difficult at times, but Slosar is a firm believer in preparation and engagement. Understanding his clients creates authentic photos brimming with intensity and soul, whether it be for an ad, the cover of a magazine, or a personal project.
The keys for a successful shoot are as simple as, “Trusting in the process, being prepared in advance, and creating a connection/engagement with your subject,” Slosar said.
That task is not as simple when you have multiple moving parts in a shoot. People playing sports, cars in motion, or a skateboarder soaring down a steep California road might seem like a stiff challenge for many photographers, but Slosar adapted and thrived.
“I truly enjoy shooting all of it,” Slosar said. “It's the process and engagement with subjects while creating movement and natural moments.”
Slosar consistently works with a multitude of public figures and international brands. Whether he is elegantly photographing models, or posing Kendrick Lamar’s Black Hippy supergroup, Slosar’s images effortlessly capture raw emotion and energy. He turns an everyday workout with NFL superstar J.J. Watt into a choreographed demonstration of craft and professionalism. His success and renown with major companies often lead to more opportunities through connections made and experience gained. “Last year I really enjoyed and was proud of the work I did with Reebok and Roundhouse Agency,” he said.
Slosar is a trusted name in the commercial advertising world, but his work and passion do not stop there. “Currently I am most proud of and excited about a personal project I have been working on the past year that I am currently wrapping up and placing into print production,” Slosar said. “It’s a portrait project titled, Garage Portraits.”
It isn’t often where passion meets profession, but Michael Slosar has built an impressive name for himself in the competitive world of photography. His uncanny ability to capture rich emotion for all types of clients is what distinguishes him from the crowd, and his confidence shows in the bold photos he snaps on a daily basis.
If Michael Slosar could go back in time to shoot any era or person, who would it be?
“If I could go back in time I would go back to the 90’s and early 2000’s to shoot and begin my career. Digital killed the art and craft of what it was to be a photographer; the craftsmanship or technical knowledge needed. Today everyone is a photographer.”
